Welcome to the very first of many weekly recaps for the 24-25 Pokemon TCG season here in Australia.
Number Of Total Events: 10
League Challenges: 6
League Cups: 4
This week we officially kicked off the season here in Australia with 10 total events across the country. There were 4 League Cups and 6 Challenges held in 4 states across all 3 divisions.
The year looks to be Oceania’s most competitive yet, with the new Top X system in place. The top 20 Masters, 10 Seniors and and 10 Juniors, along with all Australian Regional Winners, will represent Oceania at the 2025 World Championships. With a BFL of 4 for Challenges and Cups this year, it is evident from the turnouts on week 1 that this will be a highly contested affair.
In particular, look to the Seniors Division to have some of the most competitive events of the season. With Drake, Kingsley, Gustavo, Madeline and more of our top 10 from the past season moving up a division, along with the return of many others, this is shaping up to be an epic year for Seniors!
NSW had its first championship-level event on Thursday July, 4th with a Best of 1 Weeknight League Challenge at Good Games Central. There were 42 people who attended the event: 35 Masters, 3 Seniors, 4 Juniors. Jack Underwood came home with the win in the masters division, with Addison Yip winning the senior division and William Lu winning the junior division.
Over the weekend a double cup took place at Good Games Town Hall on Saturday and Good Games Central on Sunday.
Each Cup had 38 Masters in attendance. Some of the top ranked players in Australia, including The current #1 ranked player in the world Brent Tonisson. The Town Hall cup was won by Nathan Spry, who took his Regidrago deck all the way to the final round against Jeremy Evans, ultimately coming out on top for his very first cup win.
On Sunday, Good Games Central held a league cup with 38 masters in attendance. The cup was won by Christian Hasbani, who defeated Lucas Hamilton-Foster in the finals. Nathan Spry also followed up his win the previous day with a 3rd place showing, which puts him on top of the points standings in Australia.
The Senior Division had 10 players in attendance, and after 4 rounds of Swiss and a top cut of 4, Elijah Smart defeated Noah Hacker for the cup win.
In the Junior Division, there were 3 competitors in attendance. They battled it out in a side tournament with the seniors over 4 rounds, with Arnold Hepner turning his 2nd place finish from Saturday into his first win of the season!
VICTORIA:
Victoria only had 2 events this week, with a challenge to kick off the season at Maze of Fitzroy, followed by the very first CP event held at Blacklist Cards & Collectables, who hosted a League Challenge.
At Maze of Fitzroy, Beau Mcelroy won the challenge for the Masters division, finishing 1st out of the 27 participants. In the Senior Division Xavier Dundas took the win, and the Junior Division was topped by Anakin De La Garma, who placed 1st out of the 5 players who attended.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA:
South Australia kicked off the 2024-2025 season with a bang! We had an exciting double cup weekend to start us off, heading up to Dragon’s Lair Salisbury for the first cup. The first cup had 27 Masters, and was won by Thomas McCawley on Raging Bolt Ogerpon, defeating James Goreing on Dragapult/Pidgeot in an exciting final. Top cut consisted of 3 Raging Bolts and 3 Gardevoirs!
The Seniors division was won by Charlie Ashton Rafferty, and the Juniors division was won by Minoru Handa. Look out for some action-packed recorded swiss and top cut games on the Dragon’s Lair Salisbury page!
The second cup saw us go to the heart of the city at Good Games Adelaide for their cup with 19 Masters. This cup was also won by Raging Bolt Ogerpon, in the capable hands of Lucky Sirisay, defeating Scott Langford’s Gardevoir in the final with a very clutch lost vacuum off of an Iono to 1 to take game 3! This top cut was a lot more diverse, containing 7 different deck archetypes. Thomas McCawley backed up his win with a Top 8 placement, whilst Blake Wightman made back-to-back Top 4 placements for the weekend. Mia Fountain also made back-to-back Top 8 placements.
The Seniors and Juniors division were won by brothers Hikaru and Minoru Handa, respectively. These two will definitely be some strong contenders in their divisions all season long.
South Australia is bursting with both new and established talent this season, and the race for those highly contested World Championship Invite spots will definitely make for some fierce competition down here in the south. This season will definitely be a good one, so watch this space for more updates from our scene.
