The 2024 World Championships in Hawaii will also be the introduction of a newly adjusted Tournament Format.
In recent seasons, a modified version of the Swiss format was used, which has been changed. The new format will include Swiss Rounds spread out over 2 days with an Asymmetrical Top 8 cut and single-elimination tournament to determine the winner.
Swiss Rounds will be run on day 1 and determined by the number of participants at each event. During each round, players will compete in a Best of 3 to determine the winner.
Match Points are awarded based on the Result:
Win – 3 Match Points
Tie – 1 Match Point
Loss – 0 Match Point
A Day 2 Match Point Threshold is set for each tournament based on the number of participants. Players who reach this threshold (or exceed it) will come back to compete in more Swiss rounds on day 2.
See the table below for the breakdown of Swiss Rounds:
Number Of Participants | Total Swiss Rounds | Day 1 Swiss Rounds | Day 2 Match Points Threshold | Day 2 Swiss Rounds |
---|---|---|---|---|
33-64 | 7 | 7 | N/A | 0 |
65-128 | 8 | 6 | 12 | 2 |
129-256 | 9 | 7 | 15 | 2 |
257-512 | 10 | 8 | 18 | 2 |
513-1024 | 11 | 8 | 18 | 3 |
1025-2048 | 12 | 8 | 18 | 4 |
2048-4096 | 13 | 9 | 21 | 4 |
4097-8192 | 14 | 9 | 21 | 5 |
After all Swiss rounds are completed, the Top 8 competitors, plus all competitors who have the same number of match points as the competitor in 8th place, will advance into the single-elimination tournament. In this tournament, players compete in a best of 3, with the winners advancing until a champion is determined.
