Pokemon Basics: Anatomy Of A Trainer Card

Trainer Cards:

Card Name:

The card name is the Name of the Trainer Card. It is written on the top left of Trainer cards.

Card Type: 

Trainer cards will have the word “trainer” listed on the top right of the card

Expansion Code (Set Symbol):

This is also known as the “set symbol” and can be found on the bottom left of the card. Each set released in the Pokemon TCG has it’s own unique identifier.

Regulation Mark:

The regulation mark can be found on the bottom left, and is represented by a letter. This is very useful as it identifies whether this card is legal in current standard format. As of July, 2024, Cards with a regulation mark of F and above are legal.

Card Number:

Next to the set symbol you will find the card number. usually represented as a set of 2 numbers (001/250) The first number represents the number of the card, and the second number represents the number of cards in the set. 

Trainer Rule:

On the bottom right of the card you will find a text box with the trainer rule. When you play this card, you must also obey any rules listed in this box. An example of this is supporter cards which have a rule that you may only play one supporter card per turn.
